Inm-1: Blastocyst Culture: Advantages and Disadvantages

Abstract:

Both cleavage-stage and blastocyst-stage embryo transfer policieshave advantages and drawbacks.Potential advantages of blastocyst culture and transfer in human IVF include: i. synchronization of the embryo with the female tract leading to increasedimplantation rates; thereby, reducing the need for multipleembryo transfers, ii. assessment of viability of an embryobefore transfer. This can be achieved by both the identification of those embryos with little developmentalpotential, as manifest by slow development or degenerationin culture, and by the introduction of non-invasive tests of developmental potential to select the most viable embryosfrom within a cohort for transfer. Furthermore, culture of the human embryo beyond the 4-8-cell stage, the time at which the genome is activated, will facilitate the quantification of true embryonic markers as opposed to those inherited from the oocyte, i.e. after the 8-cell stage oneis assessing embryo physiology, while prior to this the physiology of the cleavage stage embryo reflects that of the oocyte, iii. an increase in the time available between cleavage stage embryo biopsy and embryo transfer. This is of particular importance where the biopsied material has to be sent to a separate locale for analysis, and iv. facilitation of the introduction of trophectoderm biopsy for the screening of genetic diseases. Trophectoderm biopsy represents the earliest form of genetic diagnosis of non-embryonicmaterial.

Human Errors: Disadvantages and Advantages

The traditional paradigm for learning and training of operators in complex systems is discussed and criticised to react on the strong influence (the doctrine of 'mental logic') coming from research carried out in artificial intelligence (AI). The most well known arguments against the AI-approach are presented and discussed in relation to expertise, intuition and implicit knowledge. The importan...

Effectiveness studies: advantages and disadvantages

In recent years, so-called "effectiveness studies," also called "real-world studies" or "pragmatic trials," have gained increasing importance in the context of evidence-based medicine. These studies follow less restrictive methodological standards than phase III studies in terms of patient selection, comedication, and other design issues, and their results should therefore be better generalizab...

Advantages and Disadvantages of Privatization

The merits and drawbacks of privatization have been subjects of considerable debate among business-people, city leaders, and public employees alike. About the only thing that everyone can agree on is that the trend has been enormously benef...

A study on Isatis suspension trap efficiency; Advantages and disadvantages

Different types of sediment trap have been introduced so far to be used in erosion measuring stations, each with its own advantages and disadvantages in trapping aeolian particles. These traps have different collection and retention efficiency due to aerodynamic conditions. Some characteristics such as isokinetic feature of the trap, collection efficiency, time needed to download sediment, capa...
